Digital Twins: Testing Autonomous Vehicles in a Virtual World

Connected and autonomous vehicles are soon to become part of our lives and the role of simulation in transportation planning, design, and engineering has never been more vital. In an arena with so many unknowns, simulation is perfectly suited to testing: it provides a safe, risk-free environment that is extensible and flexible enough to cope with changing parameters and a multitude of variables but that also has the power to analyze many scenarios in a matter of minutes.

There are two main perspectives on this: vehicle manufacturers want to use simulation as a debugging environment, to run virtual tests with software and hardware in the loop, to see how their products are going to perform in the network; public administrations want to test the impact of that technology and forecast the consequent changes and investments in mobility management. Both want to test these connected vehicle developments under different road traffic conditions, where there might be different proportions of CAVs in the national fleet and when connectivity becomes less reliable. All of these are hard to test on the road at present but can be tested in simulation.

Aimsun Next software provides a set of tools for investigation into the use of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) connectivity. The new, extensible V2X Software Development Kit (V2X SDK) can help researchers design innovative new systems based around connected vehicles and allow them to test future urban traffic management systems, in-car information tools, and autonomous vehicle controls.

Simulating a mobility revolution: Connected and autonomous vehicles

The theoretical benefits of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) are well known: the total elimination of accidents, and a potential 900% increase in capacity by using platooning systems. However, the practical benefits when interaction with non-CAV traffic is taken into consideration are likely to be far fewer. In order to accurately undertake meaningful cost-benefit assessments, simulation has become invaluable.

While the simulation of CAVs has been possible for many years, it has typically been undertaken through making a range of simple approximations and changes to pre-existing behaviour. These typically involve specifying a vehicle type and then associating it with certain new behaviours and parameters, such as shorter desired headways or faster reaction times, to mimic the removal of the human driver from the control loop.

Within HumanDrive however we are modelling autonomous vehicles using a more detailed approach…

LAMBDA-V: Real-life driving data to improve autonomous vehicles

• 1-year feasibility study will take anonymized telematics data to help improve connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs)

Going live today, this new partnership aims to use human driver data to improve the performance and acceptability of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). ‘Learning through AMBient Driving styles for Autonomous-Vehicles’ (LAMBDA-V), is a one-year feasibility study into how human driver behavior can be analyzed and used to accelerate the adoption of CAVs. For example, the likelihood of a human driver swerving to avoid a pothole, or how and when they apply the brakes when entering a 30mph zone. This data can help better inform the decision-making of CAVs.

LAMBDA-V is part of the UK Government’s £22m funding from the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV) for projects to develop autonomous vehicles. The lead partner is CloudMade, bringing expertise in machine learning and human driver behavior modeling. The other partners include Trakm8, which will collate and analyse anonymized sample data from thousands of vehicles. The other consortium partners are Birmingham City Council as the highway authority with legal powers and duties; and smart mobility software expert Aimsun.

James Brown, CTO of CloudMade, said: “Understanding human behavior and modeling this behavior is one of the key elements in humanizing autonomous vehicles and enabling personalisation of the vehicle. CloudMade, with its extensive experience and expertise in machine learning and human behavior profiling, is uniquely positioned to utilize these capabilities in this program. The CCAV grant will enable us to accelerate the development of solutions that learn individual driver behavior and derive the necessary rule-sets and approaches to modeling and adaptation during the drive.”

LAMBDA-V is a one-year study on the feasibility of processing existing massive datasets, to understand the parameters needed for modeling human drivers and how to extend them to make vehicle rules, improving current technology and modeling impact to balance comfort, capacity and safety. This could ensure CAV behaviour meets the needs of both regulators and customers.

The project will focus on innovative exploration of a full end-to-end data chain and business model in a mixed fleet environment. This integrates vehicle maker and road operator perspectives on CAV behavior; and examines how to develop privacy-law-compliant datasets for other CAV projects. It brings together those who develop CAVs and modeling software with data from massive mixed fleets of anonymized drivers across the UK, rather than small fleets of specialized vehicles in one location.

New rules for safer and more efficient driving behavior may be built from data from existing vehicles, based not just on road laws but on how humans drive vehicles in specific circumstances. These could be ‘tuned’ by modeling how CAVs and other vehicles then behave in a mixed fleet, which will help to tailor early CAV behavior to match that of human drivers and thereby improve confidence for early adopters.

The key output will be identifying potential product improvements for all partners to make data, modeling and rules generate new sales. The benefits would include: reduced unforeseen impacts on traffic; patents on rules for CAVs; an improved understanding of early mixed fleet operation of human and automated vehicles and how to make early level self-driving vehicles attractive to users; and improved understanding for highways authorities and vehicle makers regarding how to deploy CAVs on a variety of real-world roads.

Research into human-automation interaction gets the green light

ITS Leeds academic, Dr Gustav Markkula, has been awarded the prestigious EPSRC fellowship to research safe coexistence of humans and self-driving vehicles. The focus of Dr Markkula’s fellowship will be to enhance the development of automated vehicles by investigating and modeling how humans behave and interact in traffic. Using a multidisciplinary approach, with co-investigators from the University of Leeds School of Computing (Dr Matteo Leonetti) and School of Psychology (Dr Jac Billington), Dr Markkula aims to build on existing models of driver and pedestrian behavior, extending them with methods and knowledge from cognitive neuroscience and machine learning.

Deputy Group Leader of the Human Factors & Safety Group at the University, Dr Markkula explains: “Comprehensive safety testing of self-driving vehicles requires a large amount of computer simulation, to cover the vast range of possible traffic situations that can occur. However, when it comes to complex, interactive situations, we do not yet have good models of human behavior to put in the simulations.”

Aimsun is one of the two project partners who will provide advisory support as well as first uptake of the models to be developed; the other is Five AI, a UK startup developing an autonomous shared transport service for European cities, starting in London. Dr. Markkula also aims to engage with wider circles of stakeholders: “Safe, human-centric development and deployment of automated vehicles will require successful involvement of a diverse set of industrial actors, as well as regulatory bodies. One important part of the fellowship will be to interact with these stakeholders to help shape the research, and raise awareness of the importance of these issues.“

OmniCAV: Simulated road users in new testing framework for connected and autonomous vehicles

OmniCAV: Aimsun is one of a consortium of 11 organisations embarking on a UK government funded project to create a high fidelity
simulation environment, including artificial intelligence (AI) trained models of road users, to test connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs).

OmniCAV, which was awarded funding as part of a competition run by the Centre for Connected and
Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV)
and Innovate UK, will be fed by highly detailed geospatial data, traffic
camera data, accident data and near-miss analyses. These inputs will be used to create a high-fidelity
model of the physical environment, realistic AI road users, and an extensive open-access scenario
library.

The simulator technology will offer market-leading coverage of a diverse range of road networks
including rural, peri-urban and urban roads.

OmniCAV will lay the foundations for the development of a comprehensive, robust and secure
simulator, aimed at providing a certification tool for CAVs that can be used by regulatory and
accreditation bodies, insurers and manufacturers to accelerate the safe development of CAVs.
The project will validate the realism of the simulator by comparing its outputs with data measured
for the equivalent locations and scenarios in the real world. This will include tests on proving
grounds and open roads.

The project will culminate in a CAV being put through the entire end-to-end OmniCAV testing
programme, from simulator-only, to controlled environment, to on-road testing.
Through representation on international standard committees, OmniCAV’s results will influence, or
lead to the creation of, new international standards to ensure safe deployment and certification of
CAVs.

Kirsty Lloyd-Jukes, CEO of project lead Latent Logic, said “OmniCAV’s vision is ‘CAVs for All’: bringing
safer, smarter, self-driving mobility to urban and rural areas. But first we need to know that
driverless cars really can handle our challenging road conditions, on country lanes as much as
crowded city streets. Virtual reality “driving tests” are the only way of doing this, which is why we’ve
brought together these 11 leading organisations to build a world-first, AI-based simulation of real
Oxfordshire roads to securely and reliably test autonomous car safety.”

The partners in the project are: Latent Logic (lead), Admiral, Aimsun, Arcadis, Arrival, Ordnance
Survey, Oxfordshire County Council, UK Atomic Energy Authority, WMG (at the University of
Warwick), and XPI Simulation. Thatcham Research is providing advice as a non-funded partner.

At the 2018 annual flagship conference of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS), Yaroslav Hernandez will be presenting Unsupervised Incident Detection Model in Urban and Freeway Networks (14:10-14:30, Paper TuCT2.4).

Abstract

Reducing the effects of incidents through early detection is a crucial requirement for incident management. This paper presents an automated incident detection model based on an unsupervised approach that uses only traffic observations as model input. First, a new self-tuning statistic is introduced as a feature generation function to capture the spatio-temporal relationship of traffic data in both urban and freeway networks; these features are then used as input in the segment-based mixture model that learns complex data distributions and their parameters. The Mahalanobis Distance is used to determine whether the traffic observation corresponds to an incident or recurrent traffic state. The model performance is demonstrated for two networks: freeway with real data, and urban with simulated data. Results show that the developed method achieves high accuracy rates and early incident detection compared to widely used approaches, such as the California algorithm series and their extensions.

The Aimsun team is in Copenhagen to showcase the value of simulation for testing connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). There are two main perspectives on this: Car manufacturers want to use simulation as a debugging environment, to run virtual tests with software and hardware in the loop, to see how their products are going to perform in the network; meanwhile, public administrations want to test the impact of that tech and forecast the consequent changes and investments in mobility management.

But are these needs so different and can they in fact be complementary? As Aimsun is highlighting, the company is working on three CAV projects that partner industry, research institutions and local authorities. All three projects are funded by the UK Government’s innovation agency: the first, Flourish, is a 6.2 million Euro project launched in June 2016, largely focused on CAVs in an urban environment. For this project, Aimsun first developed the V2X communications API and will additionally train AI algorithms looking at optimal network-wide routing.

The second major project, Connected & Autonomous POD on-Road Implementation (CAPRI), aims to design, develop and test a connected and autonomous pod for moving people around airports, hospitals, business parks and shopping centres.

The third CAV project is HumanDrive, which is more focused on traditional traffic modeling, simulating the effects of autonomous car following (V2V) within mixed traffic (AVs and non-AVs) on the strategic road network.

“The field of CAV development is highly dynamic, with so many unknowns and yet also a paramount concern for safety,” says Gavin Jackman, Managing Director of Aimsun in the UK. “Our simulation software is perfectly suited to taking the risk out of testing, with the flexibility to allow changing parameters and a multitude of variables, and the speed to run many simulations in a matter of minutes. We look forward to growing alongside the incredible CAV developments that we see around us today at the ITS World Congress.”

Reprogramação Dinâmica do Tempo de Partida OD

Foi fornecido um novo experimento de reprogramação de tempo de partida do OD dinâmico. Este ajuste realiza o pico de propagação para simular os motoristas mudando seu horário de partida para atingir o mesmo horário de chegada, conforme aumenta o congestionamento na rede rodoviária. O ajuste é baseado no algoritmo HADES (Heterogeneous Arrival and Departure Times com Equilibrium Scheduling), que foi desenvolvido por Mott Mac Donald em nome do Departamento de Transporte do Reino Unido. O algoritmo estima um novo horário de partida com base no custo percebido para alcançar um destino fora do período de tempo de chegada previamente experimentado.

Ajuste de OD por grupo de faixa

Se os detectores ou estações de detecção estiverem próximos ao final da seção e cobrem um grupo de faixas que corresponde à um movimento ou um grupo de movimentos, o ajuste associa os dados reais à estes movimentos, em vez de extrapolar para a seção, fazendo um uso melhor das informações que você fornece.

O London Emissions Model (LEM) é um novo modelo de emissões mesoscópicas desenvolvido em colaboração com a Transport for London (TfL) em resposta a observações de que modelos de velocidade média tendem a subestimar emissões em baixas velocidades e que esta variabilidade na atividade dos veículos significam que as predições baseadas nas velocidades médias de link em links curtos ou por períodos curtos de tempo apresentavam incerteza significativa. A abordagem do modelo LEM é derivar as emissões para veículo individual usando sua velocidade média em um conjunto de micro viagens que formam toda a sua jornada. Uma micro viagem é definida como um segmento da viagem em que a velocidade aumenta de estacionária para > 5 km/h e volta para estacionária como ilustrado abaixo em um gráfico típico de velocidade vs tempo em um ciclo de condução urbana.

Atribuição Dinâmica

Intervalos de Escolha da Rota

Na atribuição dinâmica, o tempo de ciclo define com que frequência os custos do caminho são computados novamente e um conjunto diferente de caminhos é fornecido aos veículos que partem durante o intervalo seguinte. As mudanças nos custos do caminho e, portanto, as mudanças no conjunto de opções de caminho serão maiores durante os períodos de pico do que nos períodos fora de pico, portanto o tempo de ciclo deve ser menor durante os períodos de pico do que nos períodos fora de pico.

A opção Seleção de rota com perfil permite que os intervalos de rotas sejam agrupados e os custos do caminho sejam avaliados em intervalos menos freqüentes quando há menos variação no congestionamento e, portanto, menos necessidade de recalcular os custos do caminho e variar a escolha do caminho.

Uma Estação de Detecção é um conjunto definido de detectores em uma única seção usada para agregar estatísticas automaticamente a partir deles. Aimsun Next agora é capaz de usar o Controlador Lisa+ para fornecer controle dinâmico de semáforos simulados usando a extensão de Interfaces de Controle Adaptativo.

Estão disponíveis funções para gerenciar rotas de transporte público em resposta a incidentes, fazendo alterações na rota para todos os veículos, uma proporção de veículos ou para um veículo específico seguindo essa rota. As alterações são feitas usando novas funções da API

Algumas Ações de Gerenciamento de Tráfego não estavam acessíveis por meio da API. Novas funções foram incluídas no Aimsun Next 8.3 para corrigir isso. As novas funções são:

  • AKIActionAddChangeDestActionByID: Ativa a ação para alterar o centróide de destino
  • AKIActionAddChangeDestParkRideActionByID: Altera o destino de um veículo em uma ação de embarque e desembarque
  • AKIActionAddEnRouteAssignmentAction: Activa uma ação de “atribuição em-rota”

Scripting

A principal mudança no Aimsun 8.3 é a suspensão de todas as diferentes classes de script para fazer os procedimentos de cálculo (simulações dinâmicas, atribuição, ajuste, recuperação de resultados, procedimentos de modelagem de demanda de viagens, etc.).

Essas classes e funções foram substituídas por um mecanismo, chamado Kernel Actions, para os diferentes procedimentos de cálculo (simulações dinâmicas, atribuição, ajuste, procedimentos de modelagem de demanda de viagens, etc.) para fornecer uma interface comum para comandar sua execução.

This annual conference is co-sponsored by the ITE Nevada Chapter along with ITS Nevada, ASCE Southern Nevada Branch, UNLV College of Engineering and WTS Nevada Chapter. It is a two-day conference with transportation professionals and students from Nevada and neighboring states in attendance, and includes a full day of technical presentations on October 30th and half a day on October 31st.

This four-day, hands-on Aimsun Next training course will be held in English from Monday 8th October to Thursday 11th October in central Perth.

This course walks you all the way through the workflow of a typical project, from editing to traffic management, scenarios, outputs and calibration, with hands-on exercises to make sure you have mastered the basic concepts. After this course, you should be ready to start experimenting with Aimsun Next software.

Location

Training centre to be confirmed – but it will be located in Perth CBD.

technologies specifically developed for AVs.

Aimsun Next software provides a set of tools for investigation into the use of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) connectivity. The new, extensible V2X Software Development Kit (V2X SDK) can help researchers design innovative new systems based around connected vehicles and allow them to test future urban traffic management systems, in-car information tools, and autonomous vehicle controls.

The V2X SDK features the most common V2X message types defined in EU or North America (protocols such as CAM, DENM or SPaT) and allows the adjustment of transmission range and probability of successful transmission that simulates the physical and network layers of a Vehicle Ad-hoc Network (VANet). This makes it possible to test virtually any connected vehicle application, implementing the resulting actions at the level of a single vehicle, the immediate vicinity, or even network wide.

We are excited to present you with the final release of Aimsun Next 8.3.

This latest version of our software is focused on improving the performance of all model runs, enriching the tools for the preparation of the traffic demand, and removing constraints when running microsimulations with pedestrians.

New features include:

Multiple threads in mesoscopic simulation for faster run times than ever

Plus:

Reduced APA file size for quicker writing and reloading

Reduced DUE computational times

Profiled route choice intervals

Improved speed of OD adjustment experiments for static and dynamic matrix adjustment,
departure and for departure time profiling

Aimsun Next 8.3 Public Beta
 

Decoupling of vehicle simulation steps from Legion for Aimsun simulation steps

The previous restriction of a 0.6s simulation step when microsimulating with Legion for Aimsun no longer applies. The latest version of our microscopic simulator accepts any simulation step.

Dynamic Departure Time Adjustment

A new Dynamic Departure adjustment performs peak spreading to simulate drivers changing their departure time in order to achieve the same arrival time as congestion in the road network increases.

Detector stations

We’ve introduced this new object to easily provide aggregated detector data. A detector station emulates a single detector that covers several lanes for easier management; it also supports simulation validation at station level when the real data set has data by section instead of by lane.

46th European Transport Conference (ETC): Annual Conference of the Association for European Transport

Gavin Jackman will be attending this event, sponsored by Aimsun and jointly organised by the IET, the Department for Transport (DfT) and Newcastle University. The conference will focus on the adoption and delivery of ITS (intelligent transport systems) and C-ITS (connected intelligent transport systems) by UK local authorities.

Building on successful Transport Technology Forum events in Birmingham in autumn 2017 and York in spring 2018, the conference will cover the 26 C-ITS Pilot Projects funded by the DfT and delivered by local authorities across England. The Forum will also look at issues of evaluation, procurement and data security, including how GDPR impacts on ITS systems and developments in Europe such as C-Mobile and the UK launch of CAPITAL, the EU-wide online C-ITS learning academy.
