State-of-the-art simulation-based demand estimation methods often encounter issues related to the linear relationship between demand and available measurements in congested networks, and computational efficiency. These affect the accuracy of results and extend model run times.
To overcome these issues, a novel data-driven approach, applied to urban networks in Norway and Australia, developed for estimating the demand (Origin-Destination flows) and route choice parameters combining gradient-based optimisation and machine learning techniques was tested.
Preliminary results from the application to urban networks achieved comparable or improved accuracy of simulations with significantly reduced run times compared to traditional techniques
