Aimsun software to evaluate benefits of autonomous vehicles in the CCAV2 HumanDrive connected and autonomous vehicle project

TSS to use Aimsun software to evaluate benefits of autonomous vehicles on the UK strategic road network in the CCAV2 HumanDrive connected and autonomous vehicle project.

13th July 2017

The objective of the HumanDrive project is to build an autonomous vehicle with human-like, natural control and path planning, by 2020. It will be fully autonomous and capable of
completing a lengthy end-to- end journey in a variety of settings, including country roads, A-roads and motorways. It will also be designed to mimic the style of a proficient human driver,
to provide an enhanced experience for the occupants.

The HumanDrive consortium has recently won a grant award from Innovate UK under the CAV2 programme and TSS has been selected to model and assess the network benefits of Connected and Autonomous vehicles on the UK strategic road network for the HumanDrive Connected and Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) project. Working with Highways England, along with the Transport Systems Catapult and other project partners, TSS’s work will allow the operational evaluation of different types of CAVs along with strategies for their use and management; this will not only help with understanding of their impact on capacity but also on emissions and safety.

Gavin Jackman, Regional Director TSS explained, ‘Participation in HumanDrive and direct engagement with the strategic customer of Highway England on this important topic represents a major step forward in our profile and UK growth plans. This sets us firmly at the front of CAV Simulation in the U.K. following earlier awards of Flourish and CAPRI from the Innovate UK CAV and CAV2 schemes.’

HumanDrive is jointly funded by government and industry. The government’s £100m Intelligent Mobility fund is administered by the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV) and delivered by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK.
